Frick Park Stewards · Squirrel Hill South

Nine Mile Run Trail Cleanup

Sat, Aug 15 · 9:30 AM–12:30 PM · 3 hours

Clear invasive knotweed and litter along the restored streambed. Tools, gloves, and bags are provided; you'll work in pairs along a marked stretch of trail.

What to expect

What to wear
Long pants, sturdy shoes or boots. Sunscreen if it's clear.
Activity level
Moderate — uneven trail, bending, some hauling.
Group size
Up to 30, working in pairs.
Who else is there
Volunteer crew leaders in orange vests, plus a park naturalist.
Accessibility
Trail is packed gravel but uneven; a seated litter-sorting station is available at the meeting point.

The vibe

Quiet and outdoorsy. People spread out, so it's less chatty than an indoor shift — nice if you'd rather work than mingle.

Pro tips from past volunteers (2)

  • Meet at the Commercial St trailhead, not the Beechwood entrance — the sign is easy to miss.
  • Poison ivy is real along the lower bank. Crew leaders will point it out.
