FAQ & volunteer tips
Do I need an account to volunteer?
No. You can browse every listing and RSVP with just a name, email, and time slot. An account is only useful if you want your hours tracked over time.
What if I sign up and something comes up?
Cancel from your confirmation email, or reply to the coordinator listed on your shift. Host organizations plan for a small no-show rate; telling them early helps them backfill.
Can I bring a friend or my kids?
Depends on the shift. Each opportunity's What to Expect section lists minimum ages and whether extra hands can be added on the day.
How is a team day different from signing up individually?
Group bookings run through Plan a Team Day, where you give group size and dates and see which hosts have real capacity. You'll get an assigned coordinator instead of an inbox.
Are hours verified for school or court requirements?
Yes — ask the on-site coordinator to sign off before you leave, and we can email a verification letter within two business days.
Accessibility information
- Seated roles
- Most indoor shifts have a seated alternative. Listings state this explicitly rather than implying it.
- Step-free access
- Every listing's What to Expect section names the accessible entrance, when there is one.
- Quiet spaces
- Ask your coordinator; roughly half of our host sites have a low-stimulation room available.
- Interpretation
- ASL interpretation can be arranged for shifts with at least seven days' notice.
- Transit
- Listings include the nearest bus route when the site is more than a five-minute walk from a stop.
“I read the 'vibe' line, realized it was fine to show up not knowing anyone, and went. That was two years ago.”
“We brought 38 people. Parking, restrooms, and a named contact were all in one page. I forwarded it as-is.”
“Wednesdays at the pantry are my week. Two clicks and I'm confirmed — that's all I want from a website.”
